# Lowerford: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your car stands around Lowerford, is usually what it needs when found before the motor runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Lowerford and Bradley run, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for every tank.

Many of cars share a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lowerford: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Church Street before work, or in the car park outside White Bear on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing halts it.

It takes seconds, be it out in Barrowford or right in the heart of Lowerford.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Lowerford forecourt or a drive over in Roughlee, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark which goes in each inlet right there.

- Can't see it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at Nelson's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Lancashire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ingham Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both behind a single flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel filler is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lowerford?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Texaco, Morrisons or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle clear when you ask.

Your own driveway around Lowerford is where it should stay.

Where your motor has run already, stop somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

On the M65, under a mile from Lowerford, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Lowerford is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Lowerford: what happens when our engineers turn up

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Barrowford School, near Saint Thomas or at home, our van comes to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then that tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
