# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ludford: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where your vehicle stands around Ludford, is normally what it takes when caught before your motor runs.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains how it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around Priors Halton, as well as Ludford, carry on two liquids; your engine gets only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ludford: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a drive off Overton Road before work, or in the car park outside Charlton Arms on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

No part halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Ludlow or the middle of Ludford, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Ludford or a driveway out in Overton. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Ludlow? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Shropshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Park Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using its own spout.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Step five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Ludford?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Applegreen, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Ludford.

When the engine has run already, pull over safely and switch the vehicle off.

The next junction is the place to come off when you are on the M54, under 25 miles from Ludford.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Ludford is less a job than a run of under 25 miles towards Hereford, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Ludford, and what takes place next

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether outside St Laurence CofE Primary School, near St Giles or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — which liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

That price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers leave.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Assuming doesn't help behind Broad Gate, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and check.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Shropshire.
