# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lundin Links: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Lundin Links.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Scoonie, as well as Lundin Links, run on two fluids; your engine takes only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every filling station visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Lundin Links?

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Leven Road before work, or in the car park at Railway Inn on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on.

Drummochy or the middle of Lundin Links: it is the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Lundin Links forecourt or a driveway over in Leven Links, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Leven.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever you are around Fife — a routine to use.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Woodielea Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lundin Links?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Shell or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Lundin Links.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M90 — under 25 miles out of Lundin Links — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Lundin Links is less a job than a trip of under 25 miles towards Dundee, and so tell us.

## Lundin Links: what occurs when we turn up

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Largo Library and Community Hub or on your own driveway.

The replies decide the work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody heads out before you have had our quote by phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
