# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Lye? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts when the pump begins pulling it.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands in Lye.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lye

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will know.

- Give us a postcode starting DY9 8, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- Do not start your engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, so leave it off.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Love Lane.

- Emptying your tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

Get the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Lye, whether it is the BP or somewhere else.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

Nothing inside an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was intended to go that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its supply from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Cradley last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it is removed from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow channels.

By daybreak, a car parked around Lye with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it is just inside your tank, it doesn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside your tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Lutley or the centre of Lye equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around West Midlands your car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Lye

Many motors put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it.

Mostly it is not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside Wollescote Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway close to Crabbe Street.

One more version: darkness, the car park by The Old Bell, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

Hired motors, new cars, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Lye or the remainder of West Midlands you happen to be.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lye, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Via the filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Maybe returning from Christchurch Park, or part way across Lye, the engine may run rough, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or stall.

When you safely can, stop then turn everything off — without turning it on again to test.

Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M5, under 5 miles from Lye, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Lye to the car park by The United Church Lye is one matter; heading for Birmingham, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's noticed early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Lye: what it takes

A street beside Blue Plaque: Sir Cedric Hardwicke, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest in Lye, we come to it.

The work depends on three replies, which we get first — which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether your motor has run.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

A careful flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not wash away on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Lastly, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Lye or in a bay by the nearest station.

It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

As the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Lye itself

Lye is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Stour and close to the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Lye has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and the area is surrounded by other local communities such as Wollescote and Quarry Bank. Lye sits at an elevation of around 123 metres, making it a relatively low-lying area compared to the surrounding hills.

## Lye and West Midlands: AdBlue drains across the area

Wollescote, Stambermill and Quarry Bank are among the towns around Lye that the same vans serve, along with most of West Midlands further out, throughout the DY postcode area.

Guessing won't help by a county line or anywhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

A van that comes to you fits Lye, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, because we drain it there, in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## Lye: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each jobs vary, a flat price wouldn't be honest.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Lye Library.

That is why every call from Lye starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

Once those are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

The price is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## Still next to the vehicle around Lye?

In that case, do nothing — that's the most helpful step available.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Lye or wherever in West Midlands.
