# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lyndon

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where your car sits in Lyndon, is usually all it needs when found before your engine runs.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Lyndon and West Bromwich carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lyndon: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Grafton Road before work, or in the car park at Horse and Jockey on the way home.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Churchfield or the heart of Lyndon: it is the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Lyndon forecourt or a driveway out in Guns Village, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Sandwell & Dudley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Midlands that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Lyndon, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Lyndon: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start the engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Keep your ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Tesco, Seagar Street Service Station or another — the staff will usually help push the car clear, if you ask.

Your own drive in Lyndon is the place it stays.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M5 — under a mile out of Lyndon — at the first exit.

A short hop across Lyndon is a smaller job than a run towards Birmingham, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Lyndon, and what takes place next

Anywhere the car has stopped, be it outside Hargate Primary School, beside Lyne Purl Well or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those replies decide this work and our price.

That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it clears out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Anywhere it sits — beside Blue Plaque: The Guardians of the Poor Boardroom, on a lay-by en route to Black Country Millennium Forest, at home — that's where it gets emptied.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Sandwell Clincal Library.
