# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lynton: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Lynton.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers how it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Lynton and Barbrook carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which filler to use.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lynton: how it happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Lydiate Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside The Crown Hotel.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Lynmouth or the middle of Lynton, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Countisbury or a forecourt in Lynton.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever across Devon the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Market Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently using its own spout.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lynton?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Gulf or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway around Lynton, leave the car where it is.

When the motor has run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M4 — under 25 miles out of Lynton — at the first exit.

A short hop across Lynton is a smaller job than a run towards Swansea, under 50 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Lynton: what occurs when our technicians arrive

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Lynton Library, or by Lynton Church of England Primary School.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of your car.

After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## About Lynton itself

Lynton is a small town on the north coast of Devon, situated near the edge of Exmoor National Park. Lynton sits at an elevation of 129 metres, overlooking the Bristol Channel and the Welsh coast. Lynton is closely associated with the nearby villages of Lynmouth, Lynbridge, and West Lyn, and its population of around 1103 people live mostly in terraced housing.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Lynton included

Over EX postcodes, the teams covering Lynton — a coastal town — work the surrounding places too, West Lyn and Lynbridge among them.

Quickest of all: give a EX35 6 postcode for the van.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

Anywhere it stands — near Lynton and Exmoor Museum, in a lay-by heading to Manor Grounds, at home — that's where it is cleared.

Guessing won't help behind Saint Mary the Virgin, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and ask.

## The short version for Lynton people

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere across Devon.
