# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Macclesfield: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Macclesfield.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels in Higher Hurdsfield, like those in Macclesfield, run on two liquids; your motor takes just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Macclesfield: how it takes place

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Churchside before work, or in the car park outside The Earl of Mercia heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Hurdsfield or the middle of Macclesfield, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Moss Lane or a forecourt around Macclesfield, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many motors show which goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Cheshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Church Street at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read it.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Step five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Macclesfield?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Esso, Tesco or any forecourt will usually help to push the car clear if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Macclesfield.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next exit is where to come off when you are on the M56, under 10 miles from Macclesfield.

A short hop across Macclesfield is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive in Macclesfield

Outside Parkroyal Community School, near Macclesfield Town Hall or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

On the phone call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and make sure that it is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
