# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Machynys: How It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where your car stands in Machynys, is normally all it takes if caught before the motor runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven round Machynys and Bigyn hold a second fluid as well.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Machynys

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Pentre Nicklaus Village, or on the way home in the car park outside The Carwyn James.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Machynys or out in Morfa.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Machynys forecourt or a drive out in Wern, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark what belongs in each filler right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Llanelli's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever around Carmarthenshire, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of .

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Machynys?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Asda, Tesco or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear if asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Machynys.

Where your engine has run by now, pull over somewhere safe and switch the car off.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Machynys, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Machynys is less a job than a run of under 10 miles to Swansea, so tell us.

## What takes place when we turn up in Machynys

By the local primary school, near Pentre Awel or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains across Carmarthenshire, Machynys included

As a coastal village, Machynys shares its vans surrounding places — Ty-isaf, Seaside — right across SA postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

A postcode starting SA15 2 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle stays where it is.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Hope Baptist Church, a lay-by on the way to Machynys Golf, a drive.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Llyfrgell Tregoning, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## The short version for Machynys drivers

Read the cap before you tip.
