# Madeley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine hasn't turned, it's drained and fully purged where your vehicle is in Madeley.

Reading before the event? Then the rest covers how it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Madeley and Woodside run, with diesel for your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side behind one flap.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the slip happens.

## Madeley: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Betnell Grove before work, or in the car park outside The Barley Mow heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

Whether it occurs in Blists Hill or the middle of Madeley, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Madeley or a drive over in Aqueduct. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — from Telford Central's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Shropshire, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Park Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using its own spout.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Madeley: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Esso, JET or any forecourt will usually help pushing your car away if asked.

Your own driveway in Madeley is where it should stay.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Madeley sits under 5 miles from the M54; on it, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Madeley.

## When our engineers arrive in Madeley, what occurs?

By John Fletcher of Madeley Primary School, near Madeley Market or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies determine the work and the quote.

The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that washes away on its own, however long it sits.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains round Madeley, and Shropshire beyond

Madeley is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Tweedale and Sutton Hill among them, across the TF postcode area.

Quickest of all: quote a TF7 5 postcode to our van.

Shifting the vehicle isn't needed.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Lloyd's Coppice, a side street near Fletcher Methodist Church: our technicians drain the car where it sits.

Tricky to explain, like the back of St Michaels Church? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

## The short version for Madeley motorists

Read the cap before you tip.

AdBlue in your diesel tank regardless? Keep the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, across Shropshire.
