# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Maida Vale: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Maida Vale, catching it before the engine runs usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels in Queens Park, as well as Maida Vale, run on two liquids; your engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Maida Vale?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Biddulph Road, perhaps at Elgin on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a strange car.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and once the tip begins, nothing halts it.

Westbourne Green or the middle of Maida Vale: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, on a forecourt in Maida Vale or a driveway out in Little Venice. A few seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Kilburn High Road.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are around Greater London — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Ashworth Road.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Maida Vale already?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or anywhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Maida Vale, leave it where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Maida Vale, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Maida Vale is less a job than a run of under 5 miles towards Westminster, so tell us.

## Our arrival in Maida Vale, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Joseph's RC Primary School, close to Sir Bradley Wiggins or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies determine this work and our price.

Nobody sets off before you have heard our quote over the phone.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Throughout W postcodes, our vans covering Maida Vale — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, St Johns Wood and West Kilburn included.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting W9 1.

There's no need to move your car.

Wherever it sits — beside Sir Roger Bannister, in a lay-by en route to Rose Garden, at home — that is where it is cleared.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Richard Beachcroft & Lord Randolph Churchill.
