# Malting Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits in Malting Green, is normally what it needs if found before your engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads round Malting Green and Birch carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Malting Green?

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off The Folley, or heading home in the car park at The Layer Fox.

Unfamiliar cars come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Malting Green or out in Layer-de-la-Haye.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Birch Green or a forecourt around Malting Green.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars mark what goes in which filler right there.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Colchester Town, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Essex that is.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Fields Farm Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Malting Green already?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the East of England Coop, ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Malting Green.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Malting Green lies under 50 miles from the M11; there, take the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Colchester, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Malting Green.

## Our arrival in Malting Green, and what takes place next

Our van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Layer de la Haye Village Sign, or by Layer-de-la-Haye Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set both work and price.

Nobody heads out before you've heard our price over the phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears out on its own, however long it sits.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of the car.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
