# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Manadon: Why It Happens

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a full flush, done right where your vehicle sits around Manadon, is usually what it needs when found before your engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that's what many newer diesels around Manadon and Crownhill carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Manadon: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Bronte Place before work, or in the car park at The Golden Hind on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Pennycross or right in the heart of Manadon.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Hartley Vale or a forecourt in Manadon.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Plymouth? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around Devon — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pepys Place, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Manadon?

Don't start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Tesco or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive in Manadon, leave the car where it is.

When the engine has been run already, pull over safely and turn the vehicle off.

Manadon lies under 50 miles from the M5; on it, take the first junction.

A short hop across Manadon is a smaller job than a run towards Plymouth, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians turn up around Manadon

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it outside Manadon Vale Primary School, beside Church of the Ascension or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

We ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, since those replies determine the work and the price.

No one heads out until you have heard our price by phone.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Next our technicians start it and make sure it runs properly before leaving.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

No need to move the vehicle.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Manadon Playing Fields, a side street near St Peter's Catholic Church: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Crownhill Library.

## In short, for Manadon drivers

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Devon.
