# Manby: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits in Manby, is normally what it needs when caught before the motor runs.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Manby and Great Carlton hold another liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what filler to use.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## Manby: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Chapel Lane before work, or in the car park at The Manby Arms on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It takes seconds, be it out in Grimoldby or right in the heart of Manby.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Manby forecourt or a drive over in Stewton, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles show which belongs in each inlet just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever around Lincolnshire, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of St Mary's Crescent.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Manby already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Esso, BP or any other — the staff will usually help push your car away, if you ask.

On your own drive in Manby? So the car remains where it is.

Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

Leave the M180 — under 50 miles out of Manby — at the next exit.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Manby is a smaller job than driving under 50 miles towards Lincoln — so say roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Manby

Outside Grimoldby Primary School, close to Grimoldby & Manby Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which fluid, which amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

On the phone call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Then that tank is emptied and the system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of it clears out on its own, however long it is left.

Filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of your car.

Before we leave, our engineers start it and check that it's running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Manby and across Lincolnshire

Manby is a rural village, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Little Carlton and South Cockerington among them, across the LN postcode area.

Quickest of all: quote a LN11 8 postcode to the van.

The vehicle remains put.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to St. Mary, a lay-by on the way to Castle Plat, a driveway.

Assuming won't help behind St. Edith, on a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## In short, for Manby drivers

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Lincolnshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
