# Manor House: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Manor House.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels in Finsbury Park, like those in Manor House, run on two fluids; your motor gets only your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler for every tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Manor House: how it occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Green Lanes, or heading home in the car park outside The Finsbury.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Brownswood Park or the middle of Manor House, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Manor House or a drive out in Stamford Hill. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Harringay Green Lanes's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is in Greater London — a simple routine to use.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and never in a rush by Woodberry Grove on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through the own spout.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Manor House?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Texaco or anywhere else.

Your own drive around Manor House is the place it should stay.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means the place to leave if you're on the M1, under 10 miles from Manor House.

## When we arrive around Manor House, what happens?

By Woodberry Down Community Primary School, close to Museum of Homelessness or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because the replies set the work and price.

During the call itself, you are told our quote — before anything else.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out by itself. Hence it matters more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
