# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Manor Park

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Manor Park, finding it before your motor turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Epsom, as well as Manor Park, run on two fluids; the motor takes only the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Manor Park

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Evelyn Way, or outside The Cricketers on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a strange vehicle.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing halts it.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Livingstone Park or bang in the heart of Manor Park.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Chessington or a forecourt in Manor Park, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Epsom.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Surrey, follow this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Queen Alexandra's Way.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Manor Park?

Do not start your engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the BP, the Texaco or anywhere else.

On your own drive in Manor Park? So the car stays where it is.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off.

Leave the M25 — under 3 miles out of Manor Park — at the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Manor Park is smaller work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Westminster, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Manor Park, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Stamford Green Primary School and Nursery, close to Moat or on your own driveway.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those replies settle this work and the price.

On the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running properly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
