# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mansewood

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where your vehicle sits in Mansewood, is usually what it needs if found before the engine runs.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads round Mansewood and Orchard Park carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together under one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mansewood: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Bemersyde Avenue, or heading home in the car park outside Eala Bhán.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Hillpark or the middle of Mansewood, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Mansewood or a drive over in Newlands. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — at Thornliebank's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever across Glasgow City, follow this routine.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Hillside Quadrant at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Mansewood?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Mansewood.

When the motor has run already, pull over safely then switch it off.

The next junction is where to leave if you are on the M77, under 3 miles from Mansewood.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Mansewood is smaller a job than a run of under 5 miles to Glasgow, and so tell us.

## Mansewood: what happens when we arrive

Our van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Eastwood Parish Church, or outside the local primary school.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide the work and quote.

That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

After that we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains around Mansewood, and Glasgow City beyond

Throughout G postcodes, our teams that cover Mansewood — a residential suburb — work the surrounding spots too, Carnwadric and Auldhouse included.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting G43 1.

Shifting the car is not necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Holy Name RC Church, a lay-by on the way to Mansewood High Park, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Pollokshaws Methodist Church? By a county line? Checking is better than guessing, so phone.

## In short, for Mansewood motorists

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Glasgow City, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
