# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Markland Hill? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully flushed where your car sits in Markland Hill.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Markland Hill, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Take your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BL1 5, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is wasted.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Victoria Road.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

At a forecourt around Markland Hill, whether it is the Morrisons or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle clear of the pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave it exactly where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Johnson Fold last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it is drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out.

Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Markland Hill leaves it worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

No damage comes as long as it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when your engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Fernhill Gate or the middle of Markland Hill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Greater Manchester your vehicle has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Markland Hill: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Markland Hill Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

After work, a container goes in on a driveway close to Markland Hill.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Victoria Inn, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a company car, or the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use least.

An identical slip, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Markland Hill or the rest of Greater Manchester.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Markland Hill?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It's been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might show up, maybe midway across Markland Hill or coming back from Ravens Wood.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M61, under 3 miles from Markland Hill, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so driving for Salford, under 15 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Markland Hill to the car park by Christ Church Heaton Church of England.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been started.

When it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

## Markland Hill: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a road near The TRIANGLE Community Methodist Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Markland Hill, and the van travels to it.

Which fluid went in, about how much, plus if the engine has been run: our technicians check before all else, because those shape the work.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Markland Hill or in a bay outside Lostock.

It's tested on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before our technicians head off.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Markland Hill: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Heaton Library and Children's Centre.

That's why every call from Markland Hill starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those answers shrink a range right down to one figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Next to the car around Markland Hill, still?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.
