# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Marsh: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Marsh.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels around Haverbreaks, as well as Marsh, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

There's a filler for each tank.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station call-out, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Marsh?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Alandale Gardens, or outside Tite & Locke on the way home after work.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Abraham Heights or the middle of Marsh, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Marsh forecourt or a drive out in Ryelands, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many cars mark which belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Lancaster? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Lancashire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Ashbrook Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the own spout.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Marsh?

Brief list, then. First: the motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Asda, Esso or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own driveway around Marsh is the place it should stay.

Where the engine has been run already, pull over safely and turn the car off.

On the M6, under 3 miles from Marsh, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Lancaster, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Marsh.

## Our arrival around Marsh, and what happens next

Outside Willow Lane Community Primary School, close to Marsh Community Centre or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Those replies settle the work and our price, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then your tank is drained and your system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

The engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run need about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## About Marsh itself

Marsh is a suburban area located on the coast of Lancashire, near the city of Lancaster. Marsh sits at a low elevation of around 8 metres, close to the shoreline. Marsh is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and its proximity to nearby places such as Abraham Heights and Scale Hall.

## AdBlue drains around Marsh and across Lancashire

Over LA postcodes, our teams that cover Marsh — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Scale Hall and Lancaster included.

A postcode starting LA1 5 gets our van to you fastest.

The vehicle stays put.

The drain happens right there, be it a driveway, a street near The War Memorial, or a layby on the way to Giant Axe Field.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Giant Axe, ring and ask instead of assuming.
