# Marsh Lane: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor has not turned, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits around Marsh Lane.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Marsh Lane and Birleyhay run, with diesel feeding your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Marsh Lane: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Ford Road before work, or in the car park outside Butchers Arms on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Bramley or the middle of Marsh Lane: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt in Marsh Lane or a drive over in Greenside. A few seconds, no more.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Dronfield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is in Derbyshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush beside Lightwood Road at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Marsh Lane already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Total, the JET or anywhere else.

Your own driveway in Marsh Lane is where it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Marsh Lane, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Marsh Lane is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles to Sheffield, so tell us.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up around Marsh Lane

Our van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside War Memorial, or by Marsh Lane Primary School.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those replies settle the work and the quote.

Nobody heads out before you've had our quote over the phone.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it sits.

Once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
