# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Mastrick? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition too.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm starts until the motor sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Mastrick, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps right now, Mastrick: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, take the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and about what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will see.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting AB16 5, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your motor stays off.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Greenfern Road.

- Draining that tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

Moving your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Mastrick forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the very place the intake draws from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Stockethill last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it is sucked in, the harm takes two forms.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a car sitting around Mastrick. Only inside the tank, it stays the same.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and this problem is diluted fuel.

Harm only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it does nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Cornhill or the middle of Mastrick.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Aberdeen City your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Mastrick?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Close to Spey Terrace, a driver pours a bottle in on the drive after work.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside Grays Inn.

It happens most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you're around Mastrick or the rest of Aberdeen City, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mastrick?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Maybe coming back from Eric Hendrie Park, or part way across Mastrick, your motor might go lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or stall.

When safe, stop and turn everything off — with no restarting to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Mastrick, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Mastrick to the car park by Mastrick Library is one thing; heading towards Aberdeen, under 3 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught early.

## Mastrick: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Mastrick: a side street close to Mastrick Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run, because those answers decide the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

A test of the vehicle comes last, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The last step is to prime the system on clean diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Mastrick or in a bay by Aberdeen.

It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; phone and check.

No towing is needed. In Mastrick, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mastrick: the cost of fixing it

Each job is different, so not one fixed price is fair.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Mastrick Parish Church.

For that in mind, each call from Mastrick begins with the identical trio — what went in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of a figure.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van heads out, you are told the quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Beside your car in Mastrick, right now?

Then, do nothing — that is the best step there is.
