# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Matlock Bridge: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully flushed where your car is in Matlock Bridge.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Dimple, like those in Matlock Bridge, carry on two liquids; the engine gets just your diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Matlock Bridge?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Crown Square, perhaps at Twenty Ten on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Matlock Bridge or out in Matlock.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Matlock Green or a forecourt around Matlock Bridge, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show which belongs in each filler right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Matlock's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Derbyshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside A615 on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## Matlock Bridge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Esso or somewhere else.

If you are on your own driveway around Matlock Bridge, leave it where it is.

Where the motor has been run already, stop safely and switch it off.

The next exit means where to leave when you're on the M1, under 10 miles from Matlock Bridge.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Matlock Bridge is smaller work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Derby, and so tell us.

## Matlock Bridge: what occurs when our engineers turn up

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near The Loft, or outside All Saints CofE Infant School.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out on its own, however long it sits.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains about Matlock Bridge, and Derbyshire beyond

Throughout DE postcodes, our vans that cover Matlock Bridge — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Old Matlock and Matlock Bank included.

Quickest of all: quote a DE4 3 postcode for our van.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Derbyshire Dales Markets, a lay-by on the way to Hall Leys Park, a driveway.

Guessing won't help at the back of Matlock Town Hall, close to a border, or anywhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

## Matlock Bridge drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Derbyshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
