# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Meadowfield

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits around Meadowfield, is usually what it needs if caught before the engine runs.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many current diesels on the roads round Meadowfield and Brandon carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Meadowfield?

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Lobley Hill Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Station.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour begins, no part stops it.

It's seconds, whether out in Littleburn or right in the centre of Meadowfield.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Brandon Village or a forecourt around Meadowfield.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Durham.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Durham that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of John Street North.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Shut the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Meadowfield?

Short order, then. Top of it: your motor remains off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Jet, the Shell or anywhere else.

At home in Meadowfield? Then the car remains put.

Already run? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

Leave the A1(M) — under 5 miles out of Meadowfield — at the first junction.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Meadowfield makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles towards Durham — so say roughly how far it went.

## Meadowfield: what happens when our technicians arrive

Wherever your car came to rest, be it by St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, Langley Moor, near St John the Evangelist or at home, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

No one heads out before you've had our price over the phone.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it sits.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Shifting the car isn't necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street near St. John's Hall, a lay-by on the way to The Ponderosa, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Meadowfield Sports Centre.

Before you pour, read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank regardless? Leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, across Durham.
