# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Meadowmill

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, when your motor has not run, it's drained and fully cleaned where your vehicle is in Meadowmill.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Blindwells, as well as Meadowmill, run on two liquids; the engine gets just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Meadowmill

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Bankton Junction before work, or in the car park at The Tower Inn heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a new motor.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, keeps on.

The Heugh or the middle of Meadowmill: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Meadowmill or a drive over in Preston. Seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Prestonpans's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in East Lothian, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of B6371.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Finish when your tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using the built-in spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Meadowmill?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Asda, JET or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car away if you ask.

Your own driveway around Meadowmill is where it should stay.

Where your motor has been run by now, pull over safely then switch the car off.

Come off the M8 — under 15 miles out of Meadowmill — at the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Edinburgh, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Meadowmill.

## Our arrival around Meadowmill, and what takes place next

By the local primary school, close to Tombstones Mining Memorial or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the replies settle the work and the price.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Then our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
