# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Meadows

Leave the motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where your vehicle sits in Meadows, is usually what it needs if caught before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in The Park, as well as Meadows, carry on two liquids; the engine gets only your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Meadows: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Houseman Gardens, or heading home in the car park at Poet's Corner.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, carries on.

It's seconds, whether out in Standard Hill or right in the heart of Meadows.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Nottingham or a forecourt in Meadows.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Nottingham? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Nottinghamshire, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Burton Manderfield Court on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Meadows?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the pump.

Your own drive in Meadows is where it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M1 — under 5 miles out of Meadows — at the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Nottingham, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Meadows.

## When our technicians turn up around Meadows, what occurs?

Wherever your car came to rest, whether by Welbeck Primary School, near Queens Walk Community Centre or at home, our van comes to it.

The answers settle the work and our quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

On the phone call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Draining the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About Meadows and where it is

Meadows is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Nottingham, situated near the River Trent at an elevation of around 30 metres. Meadows sits adjacent to the city centre, with nearby areas including Standard Hill and the Lace Market. Meadows is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting its historical development as a residential area for workers in Nottingham's industries.

## AdBlue drains across Nottinghamshire, Meadows included

Lace Market and West Bridgford are among the towns around Meadows, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over NG postcodes.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting NG2 2.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

Draining happens right there, whether a driveway, a street near Pilgrim Church, or a lay-by on the way to Queen's Walk Recreation Ground.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Religion? Close to a border? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

## Meadows motorists: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere in Nottinghamshire.
