# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Measham: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Measham, finding it before your motor runs usually means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Reading before the event? Then what follows covers why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but many current diesels seen around Measham and Stretton en le Field hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

There's a filler for each tank.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Measham: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off High Street before work, or in the car park outside Bird in hand on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Measham or out in Oakthorpe.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Measham forecourt or a drive out in Snarestone, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars mark which belongs in which inlet just there.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a rental or company car — from Polesworth's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Leicestershire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Chapel Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Step five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Measham?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the attendants will usually help push your car away, when you ask.

On your own drive in Measham? Then your car stays put.

When your engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe and switch it off.

Measham sits under 3 miles from the M42; on it, take the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lichfield, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Measham.

## What occurs when our technicians get there in Measham

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it outside Measham Church of England Primary School, beside St Laurence or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so we ask.

That price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally your vehicle is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About Measham, briefly

Measham is a village in the East Midlands region of England, situated in Leicestershire at an elevation of 103 metres. Measham lies approximately 13.5 miles from Lichfield and 101.4 miles from London, surrounded by nearby places such as Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe, and Appleby Magna. Measham has a population of around 3099 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Leicestershire, Measham included

Donisthorpe and Appleby Magna are among the towns near Measham, a rural village, that the same vans cover, over DE postcodes.

A postcode starting DE12 7 gets our van to you fastest.

Your car remains where it is.

Wherever it sits — near Measham Garden of Remembrance, on a layby heading to Measham Recreation Ground, on a drive — that is where it is drained.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Sundial? By a county line? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

## For Measham motorists, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Leicestershire.
