# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Meir Hay

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and the ignition as well.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts until your motor sucks it round.

In Meir Hay, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Meir Hay: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting ST3 5, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition the car.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch down Thirlmere Grove.

- By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

The attendants working at any Meir Hay forecourt — the BP among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At home, the car remains just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its supply from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Sandford Hill last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning in Meir Hay makes it worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again from the diesel, so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in Longton or the centre of Meir Hay alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever in Staffordshire the car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Meir Hay

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — can look the same. No one intends it; many layouts allow it.

A bottle bought while heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Alexandra Infants' School the top-up is rushed.

After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near Albert Avenue.

Otherwise, after dark outside Tam O'Shanter Inn, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet motor, or the spare car in a home with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know the least.

Anywhere in Staffordshire, Meir Hay included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

## Meir Hay: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, perhaps part way across Meir Hay or coming back from Weston Sprink.

No restarting to test: pull over when it is safe, then switch it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M6, under 5 miles from Meir Hay, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Meir Hay to the car park by Newhall Christian Church is a very different job from a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's noticed quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Meir Hay?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Meir Hay: a side street near Awesome Walls Stoke, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and if the motor has been run: we check first, since those decide the job.

Then the tank is emptied where your car waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not clear out by itself.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, provided the motor hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Longton or a drive around Meir Hay, that is where our technicians fire it up and you head off.

The check before we leave is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Meir Hay is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Meir Hay?

There's no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open driveway is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight gap behind Gillani Noor Mosque.

What was put in, what quantity, and whether it ran: each Meir Hay enquiry opens by asking precisely that, before a quote, never afterwards.

Once they are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

Before a van sets off, you hear our quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## In Meir Hay and still next to the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Meir Hay or wherever in Staffordshire.
