# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mere Green

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully cleaned where your car sits in Mere Green.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Mere Green: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, take your keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting B74 4, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- Shifting the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start your motor.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way along Mere Green Road.

- By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Mere Green forecourt you're on, the Shell or any other.

On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

From a separate reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits.

No part in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Roughley last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it's pulled in, the damage takes two forms.

What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

A motor left standing in Mere Green with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the whole fault.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Mere Green or out in Ladywood, costs more than nearly any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever around West Midlands your car sits.

## Mere Green: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Mere Green Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Hill Village Road.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Ale Hub, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Mere Green or the rest of West Midlands, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mere Green?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Maybe coming back from Hill West Forest, or part way across Mere Green, your engine might run rough, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or cut out.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than testing it again.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M6 Toll, under 3 miles from Mere Green, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That's why a hop across Mere Green to park beside Mere Green Library and a drive of under 10 miles towards Lichfield are such different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Long-term damage is very rare if it is spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Mere Green?

A street beside St James Church, Hill, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever the car has stopped around Mere Green, our engineers come to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, since those answers determine the work.

Next, draining your tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, provided your engine hasn't run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

After that our engineers start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space at Butlers Lane or a driveway in Mere Green.

It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our engineers go.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue drains in Mere Green and across West Midlands

AdBlue call-outs in Mere Green are passed to teams that serve the places near it — Ley Hill, Four Oaks as well as Moor Hall — and most of West Midlands beyond, throughout B postcodes.

Near a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

Mere Green is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Mere Green?

Each job differs, and so no single quote would be fair.

What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Ark Community Church.

That's why each call from Mere Green starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

With them, a range shrinks to one firm number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Still next to the vehicle in Mere Green?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the most useful thing you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Mere Green or anywhere in West Midlands, once you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
