# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Merkland? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your engine pulls it through.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car stands around Merkland.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Merkland, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it out.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting G66 2, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: the motor remains off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down Tintock Drive.

- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

On a forecourt around Merkland, whether it's the Gulf or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the intake draws its fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Hillhead last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it's cleared from the system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow passages.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Merkland with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is only in that tank, nothing changes.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole fault.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion remain after the next fill, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, and so watering it can't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Oxgang or the centre of Merkland alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in East Dunbartonshire your car is standing.

## Merkland: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; many layouts invite it.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Langmuir Road, as the day ends.

One more version: dim light, the car park outside The Chase Inn, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuel types.

An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you are around Merkland or the remainder of East Dunbartonshire.

## Merkland: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Merkland Local Nature Reserve, say, or part way across Merkland.

No starting it again to test: pull over once safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Merkland sits under 3 miles from the M80; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Merkland to the car park by Merkland Outdoor Recreation Centre is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

When it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Merkland: what it takes

A street by Hillhead Community Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the car has stopped in Merkland, our technicians come to it.

Three replies decide the job, and so first we ask what went in, roughly the amount, and whether the motor has run.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step.

Whether it's a parking space outside Lenzie or a drive in Merkland, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

Before we leave, our engineers confirm it's running properly with fresh diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

Merkland has a population of around 6560 people, making it a relatively small but significant community in the area.

## AdBlue drains across Merkland and East Dunbartonshire

Cleddans, Harestanes and Broomhill are among the places near Merkland that the same vans serve, along with much of East Dunbartonshire further out, over the G postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

A van that comes to you suits Merkland, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your car to us, since our engineers drain it on the spot, on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Merkland: the cost of fixing it

Not one flat price could be fair, since every job differs.

What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St. Flannan's RC Church.

That is why every call from Merkland starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given them, a range shrinks to a single firm number.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still next to the vehicle around Merkland?

Not touching the car is, right now, the best thing you can do.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Merkland or anywhere across East Dunbartonshire.
