# Merry Oak: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system draws it in.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully rinsed where the car stands around Merry Oak.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Merry Oak: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it out.

- Ring right where you are. Say a SO19 7 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: the motor remains off.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch up Acacia Road.

- Emptying the tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

The attendants working at any Merry Oak forecourt — the Southampton Logs among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Bitterne overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

A motor left standing in Merry Oak with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the whole fault.

Mixed into your diesel and left still, it's harmless at that stage; running the motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Woolston or the middle of Merry Oak.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Hampshire the car is standing.

## Merry Oak: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. Nobody means it.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Sholing Junior School the refill is hurried.

Near Merry Oak Green, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Robin Hood.

The least familiar cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuels.

Same slip, same first response — leave it off — anywhere you are around Merry Oak or the remainder of Hampshire.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Merry Oak?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Veracity Recreation Ground or halfway across Merry Oak.

Once you safely can, stop then turn it off — with no turning it on again to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M27, under 3 miles from Merry Oak, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Merry Oak to the car park by Merryoak Community Centre is a very different job from a run towards Southampton, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been run.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Merry Oak?

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street beside Spring Road Evangelical Church, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Merry Oak, and the van travels to it.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and if your engine has run, because those answers settle the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when that tank is emptied, on the spot.

The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking space at Sholing or a drive around Merry Oak, that is where our technicians start the engine and you drive off.

Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we go.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Merry Oak?

Each job is different, so not one single price is fair.

What shifts the cost is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Sholing Baptist Church.

What went in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: every Merry Oak enquiry opens by asking precisely that, ahead of any quote, not after.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
