# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Merryoaks: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is around Merryoaks.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many current diesels driven round Merryoaks and Nevilles Cross carry another fluid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Many of motors have a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## Merryoaks: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Percy Square before work, or in the car park outside Duke of Wellington on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Lowes Barn or the middle of Merryoaks: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Merryoaks forecourt or a driveway out in Langley Moor, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Durham? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — wherever it is across Durham — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Elvet Moor, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found your filler and read it.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Merryoaks: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of it: the engine remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Jet, ask the staff to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive in Merryoaks? So your car stays put.

Already run? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off.

On the A1(M), under 3 miles from Merryoaks, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Merryoaks is smaller work than a trip of under 3 miles to Durham, and so say.

## Merryoaks: what happens when our engineers get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Neville's Cross Primary School and Nursery, near Merryoaks Community Hall or on your own driveway.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those replies decide both work and price.

Nobody sets off until you've had our quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it sits.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

The vehicle remains where it is.

The drain happens right there, be it a driveway, a street near America, or a layby on the way to North Wood.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of China? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

## In short, for Merryoaks people

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere in Durham.
