# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mid Lavant: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Mid Lavant.

Reading in advance? Then what follows explains how it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the engine — but many newer diesels driven round Mid Lavant and West Stoke hold another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler for each tank.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## Mid Lavant: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Lavant Road before work, or in the car park outside The Earl of March on the way home.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, carries on.

Whether it occurs in West Lavant or the middle of Mid Lavant, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Westerton or a forecourt in Mid Lavant, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Fishbourne, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere you are in West Sussex — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Saint Nicholas Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through its built-in spout.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Mid Lavant already?

Don't start your engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Sainsbury's or another — the staff will usually help push your car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Mid Lavant.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction is the place to come off when you are on the Waterlooville Bypass, under 10 miles from Mid Lavant.

A short hop across Mid Lavant is a smaller job than a run towards Chichester, under 3 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up around Mid Lavant, what occurs?

By Lavant Primary School, near Lavant Memorial Hall or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Those answers determine the work and our quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then the tank is emptied and the system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Always, the cap; then, the pour.
