# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Midanbury: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine has not run, it's drained and fully rinsed where the car is in Midanbury.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen around Midanbury and Bitterne Manor carry a second liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in on every filling station visit, week in, week out.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Midanbury: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

On a drive off Witts Hill before work, or in the car park at Fox and Hounds on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

New-to-you motors come next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Midanbury or out in Bitterne Park.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in St Denys or a forecourt around Midanbury.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Bitterne, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere across Hampshire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Summit Way at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found your filler and read it.

- Both under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Midanbury?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, BP or another — the staff will usually help push the car clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Midanbury, leave the vehicle where it stands.

When the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M27 — under a mile out of Midanbury — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Southampton, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Midanbury.

## Midanbury: what takes place when our technicians arrive

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it outside Moorlands Primary School, near Moorlands Community Centre or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

The replies determine the work and our quote, so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

No one sets off until you've had our quote over the phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that our technicians start the car and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
