# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Miless Green

Leave the engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where the vehicle stands in Miless Green, is usually all it takes when found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around Mount Pleasant, as well as Miless Green, run on two fluids; your motor takes just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap to use.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Miless Green: how it occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Byles Green, or outside The Cottage Inn on the way home that evening.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Miless Green or out in Upper Bucklebury.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Bucklebury or a forecourt in Miless Green.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Thatcham.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Berkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Little Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — making sure your diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start your car.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Miless Green: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Esso, BP or another — the staff will normally help roll the car away, when you ask.

At home in Miless Green? So the vehicle remains where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M4 — under 3 miles out of Miless Green — at the next junction.

## What occurs when we get there around Miless Green

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Bucklebury C.E. Primary School, near Upper Bucklebury Memorial Hall or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, since those replies decide this work and our price.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. Hence it matters more.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — clean diesel goes in, and then your car gets tested.

Before leaving, our technicians start the car and make sure that it's running properly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our technicians are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
