# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mill Fields

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts once your pump begins pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Mill Fields, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Mill Fields, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, take the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so do not throw it out.

- Call just where you are. Quote a BD23 1 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: your motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Raikes Road.

- By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Get the people behind the counter to help you roll the car away from the island if you are at a forecourt in Mill Fields, whether it's the Barge Fuel Station or somewhere else.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the same place the intake sucks from.

A car topped up on a driveway in Middle Town overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your motor turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; and, since it eats at some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning around Mill Fields leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, waiting costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Peter Watson Skipton Ltd and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in New Town or the middle of Mill Fields.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere your car has stopped in North Yorkshire.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Mill Fields

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it's never the forecourt: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Skipton, Water Street Community Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

Near Grassington Road, someone tips a container in at home after work.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside The Curious Fox.

It takes place most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to the same mistake, anywhere around Mill Fields or the rest of North Yorkshire you happen to be.

## Mill Fields: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Via the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is where it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, maybe midway across Mill Fields or coming back from The Beach.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Mill Fields lies under 15 miles from the M65; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Mill Fields to the car park by St Stephens Catholic Church is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been running.

If it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## Mill Fields: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Mill Fields: a side street near BVM, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies decide the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid was put in, about what quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed all the way through since residue will not wash away by itself.

Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the car.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking space by Skipton or a drive in Mill Fields, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off.

It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs properly before we head off.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot.

At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Mill Fields is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Mill Fields?

Because the jobs differ, a single figure would not be honest.

What moves the price is, first, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Spirit Of Pilates.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Mill Fields call opens with exactly that, before any figure, not after.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Mill Fields: still beside the vehicle?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful thing you can do.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Mill Fields or anywhere in North Yorkshire.
