# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mill Meads: How It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Mill Meads.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of newer diesels driven round Mill Meads and Bromley hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors share a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Mill Meads?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Wise Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Carpenter's Arms.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Stratford Marsh or the middle of Mill Meads: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Mill Meads forecourt or a driveway over in Maryland, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at West Ham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever around Greater London, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Britten Court, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Stage five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mill Meads?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Tesco, the Shell or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Mill Meads, leave the car where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Mill Meads sits under 5 miles from the M11; on it, use the first exit.

A short hop across Mill Meads is a smaller job than a run towards London, under 5 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Mill Meads, what happens?

Wherever your car has stopped, be it by Carpenters Primary School, near Lighthouse Christian Ministeries or at home, the van travels to it.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since the replies settle the work and our quote.

That price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Your engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

Fastest of all: give a E15 2 postcode for the van.

The vehicle remains where it is.

The drain takes place right there, be it a drive, a road near The Wave London, or a layby on the way to Greenway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Play Sow and Grow Community Centre.
