# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Millbay

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm starts once it is sucked through the pump — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Millbay.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Millbay

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so do not bin it away.

- Ring right where you are. Say a PL1 3 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Turning your key to ignition alone starts your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up B3240.

- By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

The staff working at any Millbay filling station — the Asda among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a dedicated tank it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Barbican last night and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Once it is drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car sitting around Millbay. Only in that tank, it stays stable.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Whether your vehicle sits in Pennycomequick or the heart of Millbay, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Devon the car is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Millbay: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. No one intends it; many layouts invite it.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The top-up gets hurried outside St Andrew's Cof E VA Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped in.

Near Millbay Road, a driver tips a container in at home in the evening.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park outside The West Hoe, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you're in Millbay or the rest of Devon, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Millbay?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from Millbay Park, or part way across Millbay, the motor may run rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M5, under 50 miles from Millbay, by the first junction and stop safely, not driving on.

A quick hop across Millbay to the car park by Plymouth Arena is one thing; driving towards Plymouth, under a mile away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

If it is spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.

## Millbay: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has stopped around Millbay — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by Plymouth City Patriots — the van travels to the vehicle.

Three answers shape the work, and so first we ask which fluid was put in, roughly what quantity, and if your motor has run.

Next, emptying your tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your motor has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the final step.

Whether it is a parking space outside Plymouth or a drive in Millbay, that is where our technicians start the car and you head off.

It's tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our technicians leave.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

## About Millbay

Millbay is a coastal suburban area in Devon, situated near the city of Plymouth. Millbay sits at a low elevation of around 11 metres, with its predominant housing being flats. Millbay is close to nearby places such as West Hoe and Stonehouse, and is part of the larger Plymouth urban area.

## AdBlue drains in Millbay and across Devon

The teams that answer AdBlue calls in Millbay also cover the locations about it, West Hoe, Stonehouse and Plymouth among them, and most of Devon beyond, across the PL postcode area.

Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

Wherever your car stands — your drive at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — we drain it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Millbay, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Millbay

Each job is different, so no fixed price is fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind The Clipper.

Ahead of any quote, never afterwards, each enquiry from Millbay opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran.

When they are known, a range becomes one fixed number.

The price is given during the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Check your insurance while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Millbay and still next to your car?

Then, the best thing to do with your car is to not touch it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if the engine ran is everything we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest across Devon, Millbay included.
