# Millcombe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through the pump — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Millcombe.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Millcombe: the first few minutes

Do:

- Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting TQ9 7, or whatever street is nearest, and our van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so keep the car off.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short way along Millcombe Bridge.

- Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The attendants working at any Millcombe filling station — the BP included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same spot the pickup draws from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Hutcherleigh last night and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through if your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

A vehicle left standing in Millcombe with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a separate kind of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Sainsbury's.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left in your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Eastdown or the middle of Millcombe.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Devon the vehicle is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Millcombe?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Blackawton Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off Vicarage Road, as the day ends.

Else, in dim light outside The George Inn, your car is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet motor, or the spare car in a home with both fuels — the cars people know least.

Wherever you're around Millcombe or the rest of Devon, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Millcombe?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

Through your filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps part way across Millcombe or coming back from Bow Wood.

When safe, stop then turn everything off — without turning it on again to test.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M5, under 25 miles from Millcombe, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so heading towards Plymouth, under 25 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Millcombe to the car park by Blackawton Village Hall.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

If it is caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Millcombe

A street by St Michael's, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your car has stopped in Millcombe, our technicians come to it.

The work depends on three answers, which our technicians ask for first — which fluid went in, the amount, and whether the motor has run.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, provided the engine has not run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Totnes or on a driveway around Millcombe.

Before we leave, our technicians check it is running correctly with fresh diesel in.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Millcombe itself

Millcombe is a small coastal hamlet in Devon, situated near the towns of Bow and Blackawton, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Millcombe sits at an elevation of 67 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside and coastline. Millcombe is located near Woodford and is approximately 20 miles from Plymouth, making it a quiet residential area. Millcombe has a population of around 511 people, living in its scattered detached homes.

## AdBlue drains across Millcombe and Devon

Over the TQ postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue call-outs in Millcombe reach most of Devon too, Bow, Blackawton and Woodford included.

Near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

A van that comes to you fits Millcombe, a rural hamlet: you have no need to take the vehicle to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, on a drive, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Millcombe?

There's no fair single price, since the jobs are not the same.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Woodlands Family Theme Park.

Ahead of a figure, never after, each call from Millcombe opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus if the engine ran.

When they are answered, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear our price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Millcombe: still next to the vehicle?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and if it ran is all our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Devon, Millcombe too.
