# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Millheugh? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition too.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system draws it in.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully rinsed where your car sits in Millheugh.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Millheugh, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting ML9 1, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Do not do these:

- Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start your motor.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep it off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Even a short distance up Millheugh Brae is too far to drive the car.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Millheugh forecourt you are on, the Asda or any other.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Machan yesterday and not switched on remains the simple one, provided nobody turns your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it is cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages.

A motor left standing in Millheugh with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Whether the car is in Strutherhill or the heart of Millheugh, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Anywhere across South Lanarkshire your car has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Millheugh

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Clove Mill Wynd.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park by Applebank.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new ones, fleet cars, and the spare motor in a home with one of each fuel types.

Keep it switched off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever in Millheugh or the rest of South Lanarkshire you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Millheugh, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

Perhaps coming back from Robert Smillie Park, or part way across Millheugh, the engine may go lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M74, under 3 miles from Millheugh, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Hopping across Millheugh to the car park by Gasworks Park is one thing; heading for Glasgow, under 15 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after your engine has been started.

If it's caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

## Millheugh: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Millheugh: a side street close to Larkhall Leisure Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, and so first our technicians ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and if your engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue won't flush away by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, if the engine hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step.

At that point our engineers start it and you drive off, whether from a parking space at Larkhall or a driveway in Millheugh.

We confirm it runs properly on clean diesel before we go.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

## Millheugh and South Lanarkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the ML postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue call-outs around Millheugh serve much of South Lanarkshire as well, Glengowan, Raploch and Larkhall among them.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are by a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

Anywhere the car sits — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians empty it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Millheugh, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Millheugh

Every job differs, and so not one single price would be honest.

Three things move the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Robert Smillie Primary School.

That's why each call from Millheugh starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

Given them, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

As the van is travelling, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Millheugh: still next to the car?

Not touching the car is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus if it ran is everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest across South Lanarkshire, Millheugh included.
