# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Milton

Keep your engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, when the engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle sits around Milton.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Milton and Rhives run, with diesel feeding your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Milton

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off School Road, perhaps outside the pub in the village on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's seconds, be it out in Tarbat Mains or bang in the heart of Milton.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Brenachie or a forecourt in Milton, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Fearn's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across Highland, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of B817, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both under one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Milton: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or the Asda, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway in Milton is where it should stay.

Where the engine has run by now, pull over safely then turn the vehicle off.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Milton, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Inverness, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Milton.

## What occurs when our engineers arrive in Milton

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Mercat Cross, or outside the local primary school.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because those replies settle this work and the quote.

On the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of dispatch.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Next our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Moving the vehicle is not needed.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Balnagown Wood, a side street close to Kilmuir Easter: we drain it where it is.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of James Maclean Memorial? By a county line? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.
