# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Minety: Why It Occurs

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where your car sits around Minety, is usually what it takes when caught before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your engine — but many modern diesels seen round Minety and Cloatley End carry a second liquid as well.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Minety?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Sawyers Hill before work, or in the car park outside The Turnpike on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on.

Lower Moor or the heart of Minety: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Minety forecourt or a drive over in Derry Fields, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles mark which goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Kemble.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, anywhere around Wiltshire, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Hornbury Close.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Step five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Minety?

Short order, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away when you ask.

Your own drive in Minety is where it stays.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then turn off.

The next exit is where to come off when you're on the M4, under 5 miles from Minety.

A short hop across Minety is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers get there in Minety

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Minety Church of England Primary School, near Minety Rugby Club or on your own drive.

What fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask since those answers decide both work and quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes out unaided, however long it is left.

After your filter is cleaned — or replaced, where required — clean diesel goes in, and then your vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Old Copse, a side street close to Minety Village Hall: we drain the vehicle where it sits.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Leonard.

## Minety drivers: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Wiltshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
