# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mintsfeet: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where the car stands around Mintsfeet, is normally all it takes if found before your motor runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels near Mintsfeet and Hallgarth carry, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every filling station call-out, again and again.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## Mintsfeet: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Rosemede Avenue before work, or in the car park outside IBIS Sports And Social Club on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Mintsfeet or out in Kentrigg.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Kirkbarrow or a forecourt in Mintsfeet.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Kendal? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is across Cumbria — a routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Mintsfeet Road South on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Mintsfeet: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Mintsfeet.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

Come off the M6 — under 5 miles out of Mintsfeet — at the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Mintsfeet.

## When we arrive in Mintsfeet, what happens?

Wherever your car came to rest, be it by St Thomas's CofE Primary School, near Kendal Lawn Tennis Club or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

The answers determine the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

No one sets off until you've heard the quote by phone.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

No need to shift the car.

Wherever it sits — beside Lakeland Climbing Centre, on a layby en route to Jubilee Recreation Ground, on a drive — that is where it gets emptied.

Guessing doesn't help behind Kendal Lads and Girls Club, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Mintsfeet people

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Cumbria, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
