# Mirehouse West: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits in Mirehouse West.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your motor — yet many current diesels driven around Mirehouse West and Homewood hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Mirehouse West: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Kinniside Avenue before work, or in the car park outside Distressed Sailor heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Mirehouse West or out in Greenbank.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Mirehouse West forecourt or a driveway out in Rosebank, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Corkickle? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Cumbria the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Meadow Road.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Mirehouse West?

Short list, then. First: the motor stays off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the Esso or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Mirehouse West.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Mirehouse West lies under 50 miles from the M6; on it, use the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Mirehouse West is less a job than a run of under 50 miles towards Carlisle, so tell us.

## When our engineers turn up in Mirehouse West, what takes place?

Wherever the car has stopped, be it outside Valley Primary School and Nursery, near West Coast Community Fitness Centre or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because the answers decide the work and the quote.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
