# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Monks Park

Keep your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

In Monks Park, finding it before your engine runs normally means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — yet many newer diesels seen round Monks Park and Rowleys Green hold another liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both side by side behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Monks Park: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Everdon Road, perhaps at Unicorn Social Club on the way home after work.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Holbrooks or the middle of Monks Park: it is the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Parting of the Heaths or a forecourt in Monks Park, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Coventry Arena's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — anywhere you are in West Midlands — a simple routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Holbrook Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — confirm your diesel filler remained closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Monks Park?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Tesco or any other — the attendants will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

Your own drive in Monks Park is the place it stays.

Already run? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

Come off the M6 — under 3 miles out of Monks Park — at the first junction.

A short hop across Monks Park is a smaller job than a run towards Coventry, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Monks Park, what happens?

By Parkgate Primary School, near St Luke's Church or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the replies settle the work and the price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car.

Then our engineers start the car and check it runs properly before we leave.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains around Monks Park, and West Midlands beyond

Monks Park is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places near it, Whitmore Park and Foleshill among them, across the CV postcode area.

Quickest of all: quote a CV6 4 postcode for our van.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Holbrooks Park, a side street close to Holbrooks Evangelical Church: we drain the vehicle where it sits.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Dunbar Avenue Evangelical Church.

## For Monks Park motorists, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank after all? Leave the car switched off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across West Midlands.
