# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Monteith? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Monteith, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Monteith: the first few minutes

Do these:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, take the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting BT32 5, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Do not start the motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so keep the car off.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance up Dunskey Street.

- Beside the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Monteith forecourt — the the nearest petrol station included — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At home, the vehicle remains exactly where it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what the motor lets out.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very spot the pickup sucks from.

A motor filled on a driveway in Moneyslane yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when your engine turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it's removed from your system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car sitting around Monteith. Just in the tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue splits again out of the diesel, and so watering it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Drumlough or the centre of Monteith equally.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across County Down the car sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Monteith?

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it's not the filling station: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried.

Someone pours the bottle in at home, right off South Crescent, as the day ends.

One more pattern: darkness, the car park outside the pub in the village, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare motor of a home with one of each fuels — the cars people use the least.

Wherever you're in Monteith or the rest of County Down, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Monteith?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from the green space at the edge of the village, perhaps, or midway across Monteith.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Monteith, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Monteith to park near the centre and a drive of under 15 miles towards Newry are such different jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

When it's spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Monteith: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest in Monteith — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street by a street just off the centre — our van travels to your vehicle.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your motor has run, since those answers settle the work.

Then that tank is emptied where the vehicle sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since residue will not flush away unaided.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step.

After that we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by the nearest station or a driveway around Monteith.

We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Monteith itself

Monteith is a small locality in County Down, situated inland at an elevation of 137 metres, approximately 10 miles from Newry. Monteith is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Monteith sits near several nearby villages, including Annaclone, Katesbridge, and Rathfriland, in the rolling countryside of Northern Ireland.

## AdBlue drains around Monteith and across County Down

Annaclone, Katesbridge and Rathfriland are among the towns near Monteith that the same vans reach, together with much of County Down beyond, throughout the BT postcode area.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

A van that comes to you suits Monteith, a small village: you have no need to take the vehicle to us, because our engineers empty it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Monteith?

No flat price would be honest, because every job differs.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind the far end of the built-up part.

What went in, what quantity, plus if it ran: every Monteith enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of any figure, not afterwards.

Those replies narrow a range down to one figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear the quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your policy while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Beside the vehicle in Monteith, right now?

Then, do nothing — that is the best step available.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Monteith or wherever in County Down, once you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
