# Monton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it is emptied and fully cleaned where your car is in Monton.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of current diesels seen round Monton and Broadoak Park hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Monton: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Monton Green, or outside The Bluebell on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Monton or out in Winton.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Monton or a drive out in Dales Brow. A few seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show which belongs in which filler just there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Patricroft, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere across Greater Manchester, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Stableford Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Monton already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

Your own drive in Monton is the place it should stay.

Where your motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

On the M602, under a mile from Monton, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Salford, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Monton.

## What occurs when we arrive in Monton

Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside Monton Green Primary School, near Monton Memorial Hall or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies settle this work and our quote.

No one sets off before you have heard our quote by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

After that our engineers start the car and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take about half an hour once we arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains round Monton, and Greater Manchester beyond

Throughout M postcodes, our teams covering Monton — a residential suburb — work the nearby spots too, Patricroft and Westwood Park included.

A postcode starting M30 9 gets our van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to move.

The drain happens on the spot, whether a drive, a street near St Paul, or a lay-by on the way to Monton Green.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of Monton Bowling and Social Club, on a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and check.

## For Monton motorists, the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere in Greater Manchester.
