# Montpelier: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your car sits in Montpelier, is usually all it takes when found before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Kingsdown, as well as Montpelier, carry on two liquids; your engine takes just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Montpelier: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Chesterfield Road before work, or in the car park at The Cadbury on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part halts it.

Cotham or the middle of Montpelier: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Montpelier forecourt or a driveway over in Redland, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show what belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Bristol that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Leopold Road.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Montpelier?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the EG Bishopston Services Gas Refill, the EG On The Move or anywhere else.

Your own driveway around Montpelier is where it should stay.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off.

On the M32, under a mile from Montpelier, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bristol, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Montpelier.

## Montpelier: what takes place when our technicians get there

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether by E-Act Fairlawn Primary School, beside Saint Bartholomew's Church or at home, the van travels to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody heads out until you've had the quote by phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
