# Moor Edge: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Moor Edge, catching it before your motor turns normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in Cradle Edge, as well as Moor Edge, run on two fluids; your motor takes just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station visit, again and again.

Much less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Moor Edge: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Milligan Court, perhaps outside The Golden Fleece on the way home that evening.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Harden or the middle of Moor Edge: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Wilsden Hill or a forecourt in Moor Edge, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles show which goes in each inlet just there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Bingley? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Gatesway, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Moor Edge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the BP, the Shell or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Moor Edge.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M606 — under 10 miles out of Moor Edge — at the next exit.

A short hop across Moor Edge is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Moor Edge: what takes place when we get there

By Harden Primary School, near Harden War Memorial or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set both work and quote.

You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it sits.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after we arrive.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
