# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Moorend

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts until the motor sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Moorend, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the engine has run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Moorend: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting BD19 4, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: your motor stays off.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance down Willow Street is too far to drive the car.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Moorend filling station — the EG On the Move among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

On the drive, the car stays exactly where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Cleckheaton last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Once it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car parked in Moorend. Only in that tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second form of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco.

No harm comes as long as it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when your engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, so watering it won't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Spen or the centre of Moorend alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just in that tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, anywhere your car has stopped across West Yorkshire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Moorend: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one means it.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The top-up is hurried outside Whitechapel Church of England Primary School, because the dash lit up with a warning as the children were dropped off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Bradford Road.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside The Horncastle, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, new cars, fleet ones, and the other motor of a family with both fuel types.

An identical slip, same first step — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Moorend or the rest of West Yorkshire.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Moorend?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps part way across Moorend or returning from Moorend Recreation Ground.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M606, under a mile from Moorend, by the next junction and park safely, not carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That is why crossing Moorend to park beside Turnsteads Community Centre and a drive of under 5 miles for Bradford are such different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted soon.

## Moorend: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped around Moorend — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a street by Cleckheaton Library — our van comes to the vehicle.

Three answers decide the work, and so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid went in, about what quantity, plus whether the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is emptied, right there.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Testing the vehicle follows at the end, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if your engine hasn't run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Low Moor or on a drive in Moorend.

The check before we go is that it runs properly on clean diesel.

Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Moorend included

West End, Hunsworth and Merchant Fields are among the places around Moorend that the same vans reach, along with most of West Yorkshire further out, over the BD postcode area.

Phone and check instead of guessing when you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Moorend is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Moorend

Because each jobs differ, a flat figure would not be honest.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Hunsworth Community Centre.

For that reason, every enquiry from Moorend begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of any figure.

When they are known, a range becomes one firm number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside the vehicle around Moorend?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the most helpful move there is.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran is all we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest throughout West Yorkshire, Moorend included.
