# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Moorhouse

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Moorhouse.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — yet many current diesels driven round Moorhouse and Monkhill hold a second liquid as well.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Moorhouse?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Monkhill Road before work, or in the car park at Royal Oak on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Bow or right in the heart of Moorhouse.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Moorhouse forecourt or a driveway out in Kirkbampton, take a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Carlisle.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever it is across Cumbria — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Moorhouse Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through its own spout.

- Close the cap, and check again — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Moorhouse: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Asda, the Esso or somewhere else.

On your own drive around Moorhouse? Then the vehicle stays put.

Already started? Pull over when it is safe, then turn off.

On the M6, under 5 miles from Moorhouse, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Moorhouse is smaller work than a trip of under 5 miles towards Carlisle, and so tell us.

## Moorhouse: what takes place when our engineers arrive

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Burgh by Sands School, near Cumberland Bird Of Prey Centre or on your own driveway.

Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — what fluid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you are told our price — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it is left.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the car.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

As a coastal village, Moorhouse shares its vans surrounding areas — Hoskethill, Thurstonfield — right through CA postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting CA5 6.

No need to move your car.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Monkhill Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Whinnyriggs Plantation, a driveway.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Kirkbampton Village Hall, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## For Moorhouse people, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Still AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it where it stands, wherever in Cumbria: keep it off and phone 0333 366 0103.
