# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Moorlands? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; damage just starts once your pump starts pulling it.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully purged where the vehicle stands in Moorlands.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Moorlands: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting BA2 2, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: your motor stays off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it's pointless.

- Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Englishcombe Way.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Moorlands, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Kingsway overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, untouched — though it would be first through once your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

Once it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out.

Overnight, a car parked in Moorlands with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's only inside your tank, nothing changes.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the whole issue.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in the tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Oldfield Park or the centre of Moorlands alike.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Somerset the car is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Moorlands

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. Nobody means it.

It usually happens at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Moorlands Junior School the refill is rushed.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Englishcombe Lane, as the day ends.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Devonshire Arms.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the other car in a family with one of each fuels — the cars drivers know the least.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Moorlands or the rest of Somerset you happen to be.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Moorlands?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Perhaps returning from Englishcombe Lane Open Space, or part way across Moorlands, your engine may run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out.

When safe, stop then switch it off — with no turning it on again to see.

Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Moorlands, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Moorlands to the car park by St Luke's is a very different job from a run towards Bath, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been started.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is caught quickly.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Moorlands: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest in Moorlands — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road beside Hillside Hall — our van travels to the vehicle.

Which fluid went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the work.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Testing your car follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, where necessary, swapped.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the motor has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes last.

At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Oldfield Park or a drive around Moorlands.

The test before we leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## Moorlands and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the BA postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Moorlands serve much of Somerset as well, Bloomfield, Bear Flat and The Oval included.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

A mobile service fits Moorlands, a residential suburb: you have no need to take the car to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Moorlands?

Because the jobs vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Church of Our Lady & St Alphege, Bath.

Which fluid got in, how much, plus whether it ran: every Moorlands enquiry opens by asking exactly those, ahead of a quote, never after.

When they are known, a range turns into a single fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Alongside your car in Moorlands, right now?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, across Moorlands or anywhere in Somerset, after you call 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
